Democracy is a messy business and requires an engaged citizenry to sustain it. Our goal is to help each of our members find personally meaningful levels of activism.
We usually meet the first or second Saturday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of North Decatur Presbyterian Church, at 611 Medlock Rd, Decatur, GA. Guests can park in the lot behind the church, which is adjacent to the Fellowship Hall. However, please check the calendar on Facebook or our Google Calendar before each meeting in case of a change of location, time, or date beyond our control.
Though attendance at monthly meetings is not required, it is strongly encouraged. These meetings are an essential part of our work. They allow members to get to know each other as well as provide input that helps guide the direction of our Indivisible GA04. Monthly gatherings include a variety of activities:
- Discussions about upcoming events and engagement opportunities
- Presentations from guest speakers such as candidates running for office or officials presenting on specific issues
- Advocacy and GOTV (Get Out the Vote) activities such as writing letters or making signs
- Fellowship with other members, both before and after meetings as well as a quarterly social event such as a potluck
In addition to monthly meetings, we provide regular opportunities for members to support progressive causes individually by issuing calls to action for local, state, and national issues. We use all of the tools available to us from writing letters to the editor of local papers to showing up at our elected officials’ offices to advocate at the grassroots level.
Our chapter also hosts other events outside of monthly meetings. For instance, we offer voter registration training and volunteer opportunities. Also, we work with partner organizations to plan a variety of events. Specifically, we co-sponsor a series of educational talks called “Indivisible in Dekalb Teach-In.” This series features speakers with subject-specific expertise to inform members and the public on a variety of pressing matters.
New to politics? Don’t worry! The vast majority of Indivisible members across the country were new to politics too. Questions are encouraged, and all levels of engagement are welcome. Our team is glad to show you the ropes. By bringing together our those new to political engagement and those with more experience, we are providing the chance to learn and grow together. We are building leaders for tomorrow.
We are an inclusive group and make an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to people of all abilities. We work to make most of our events child-friendly. Please let us know if you need childcare in order to attend our events. We are working on arranging childcare for our monthly meetings. Until we can achieve that goal, most people who bring their children bring a quiet activity that their children enjoy.
We hope to see you soon!
